February is Black History Month and Ansel Pitcairn's book "Portraits of African-American Heroes" is a perfect celebration of that! Ansel was in a my class at SVA some years ago and then this book was published in 2003. Now it has just come out in paperback. 20 prominent and remarkable African-Americans are featured in short elegant chapters, written by Tonya Bolden. Some of my personal favorites are the people in the arts, the dancer Judith Jamison, the musician Dizzy Gillespie, and the artist Jacob Lawrence - Wonderful! And a number of Ansel's paintings from the book are up on display (from now until April) at the New York Public Library at both the main location at 42nd St and Fifth Ave and across the street at the Mid-Manhattan Branch, at 39th St and Fifth Ave. Ansel and Tonya are going to give a talk about their collaberation at the Mid-Manhattan Branch on Monday Feb 26 at 6:30. Mark your calenders!
