I am a big fan of everything that Christopher Wheeldon does. He has created beautiful choreography for the NYCBallet and many other companies around the world. His new and daring move to form his own company MORPHOSES is very exciting. I opened the New York Times this morning thrilled to see a big ad for the New York City Center season, October 17-21, complete with casting. He has assembled an incredible group of 22 beautiful dancers (they are all guests, a permanent company has not yet been formed). Many are from New York City Ballet, including Wendy Whelan (here in the picture with Craig Hall), Ashley Bouder, Maria Kowroski, Teresa Reichlen. And from the Royal Ballet: Darcey Bussell and Alina Cojocaru - what a treat, they rarely dance in NYC! And Aesha Ash, I've missed her since she left NYCB. These are just a few that stand out for me.
MORPHOSES had their debut at the Vail Festival in August and it sounded like it was a fantastic success. Next they will be performing in London at the Sadler's Wells, September 19 - 23. (My sister lives in London, so I am sending her in my place - actually, the tickets are a birthday present for her and her husband, but I'm looking forward to a report back! PS: They LOVED it!) The programs and dancers that Wheeldon has assembled are not all the same for each venue. Alexandra Ansanelli will be dancing at the Sadler's Wells but not in NY for example. Miranda Weese and Carla Korbes danced in Vail but not elsewhere. The schedules are exciting for each place, and it feels like it is all the beginning of something great!
I can't wait! I have my tickets already, of course!
Here is a link to Morphoses on MySpace with a cool video!
And a very interesting, probing interview with Wheeldon in Time Out.
